-
LAN (Local Area Network):
- A LAN is a group of computers and network communication devices within a limited geographical area, such as a building. There is no third party involvement.
- High data transfer speed.
- Generally less expensive technology.
- Limited geographical area.
-
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network):
- Large network that connects different organizations.
- Shares regional resources.
- A network provides large level communications.
- The network provides communication on a large scale.
- Cost is higher than LAN.
-
WAN (Wide Area Network):
- A wide area network interconnects LANs.
- It is not restricted to a particular geographic area. And may be inter connect around the world.
- Third party network is involved.
- Multiple interconnected LANs.
- More expensive.
- More sophisticated to important than LANs.
- Less error resistance due to transmission travel distance.
- Example:
- Phone Lines
- Satellites

What is networking?
- Networking is a process of communication between two or more remote party, that involves the connection of computers, media and networking devices.
Advantages of networking:
- Easy communication.
- File data and information sharing.
- Resource sharing.
- Increase storage capacity.
- Save time.
Connections between computers in a network are made using physical wires and cables.
However some connections are wireless using radio waves or infrared signals.
